With the Hijab, the Niqab and the Burqah receiving so much attention of late and in recent years, few or maybe no other book, is as absorbing  and eyeopening to read about the aversion in the West, especially in France, to the the 'veil' - as Joan Wallach Scott's 'The Politics of the Veil'. Masterfully and skillfully written, since it being published about three years ago, it has received intense attention and much critique - to the annoyance of the French.

  • In 2004, the French government instituted a ban on the wearing of "conspicuous signs" of religious affiliation in public schools. Though the ban applies to everyone, it is aimed at Muslim girls wearing headscarves. France is the land that allowed: such very unconventional and controversial writers like Henry Miller, Jean Paul Sartre and Vladimir Nabokov to write and thrive; such revolutionary artists as Pablo Picasso, Vincent Willem van Gogh and Marc Chagall to work and succeed; and such very radical leaders as Vladimir Lenin, Ho Chi Minh and Ayatollah Khomeini to think and plan. France is supposed to be the country that symbolizes and to be most supportive and protective of freedom of thought and expression; and yet, incredibly and inconceivably, of all places, France has taken the strongest and harshest stand and steps against the hijab and niqab. It is reported that, of the 65 million or so French citizens - only about 2,000 adult French Muslims or about 0.1 per cent of the French population of adult Muslim women or 0.003 per cent of the French population as a whole - wear the 'veil'; and yet the French consider the niqab/burqah a 'national security risk'!
