Client No. 9

The American news media, as always, relishes such dirt. Not even yesterday's big slump of the Dollar, or the precarious state of the American economy or the current (undemocratic) tight Democratic Party's race for the White House - not any of these is getting, now, as much coverage and such focused reporting as the former Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer's fall. And what a fall.

For a man who espoused high morals and a man who seemed to have a solid and impeccable integrity; for a politician who rose on a sword of righteousness and who went after official corruption and malfeasance with a vengeance, Eliot Spitzer has not only fallen, but made a big fool of himself. And enormously betrayed his wife and children. I fail to understand how American politicians have no consideration at all for their spouses; Spitzer could at least have spared his wife the public humiliation of dragging her to stand by him when he announced his resignation.

For a married man to fall in love with another woman or be swayed by the charms of another woman - I can understand. But for a married man - especially in Spitzer's position - to seek the services of a prostitute, and several times, I utterly fail to comprehend. I never knew there were such grotesquely expensive prostitutes! America is truly a land of extremes and excesses.

It's one of the old listed Deadly Sins: Lust, that seems to have gotten Spitzer. The Vatican recently updated its list of Deadly Sins; they missed including Hypocrisy as one of the worse sins. Of hypocrites, few can match Spitzer. He went along fooling every one that he was special and is no common American politician. In the end, he has made a big fool and a buffoon of himself. Very unfortunately, he is married. And that's what I find most sad: his hurting his family so deeply and as terribly as he has done.

The thing that still *baffles* me is why these wives would go and stand by their *man*. This has happened to so many politicians before him and they (wives) stand by their man(there was this news cast that played the song "stand by your man", I guess it was meant as a sarcasim). His wife apparently was a high corporate lawyer too but had to quit to stay at home(?). It's true,he did the deed so why drag his wife along with him, what does he want???? Forgiveness, well, then live your wife/family alone in this circus act, she has suffered enough and now all this public humiiation??? What a shame!!!! sf

I think you're being a bit too harsh here. Yes, you're right in all you say about these American politicians, but you're wrong to suggest that its just the Americans. Its been the case for far too many leaders in world history- including a fair number of past Muslim and Arab leaders. Cheating with a prostitute, and cheating with a concubine, are really not all that different of a matter. This is not an American failing. This is a failing of those with power.

SF: I didn't know his wife was a lawyer; I wonder why she agreed to accompany him.

Antonio: thank you! I visited your blog and it's all in Spanish. You should have a site translator.

Abdulmuhib: when writing the post, I wasn't thinking any bit about how America is. My main concern was Spitzer's family, especially his wife; and how cruel men can be. But your comment got me into thinking.

America loves to state and trumpet, portraying itself as THE land that gives women the most rights and the best deal. It's always harshly critical of other cultures and societies on how women are treated. And yet, it's mostly in America that the Hugh Hefners, the Bobby Gucciones, 'Hustler' and the many pornographic trades - thrive best.

I know that through out history, all over the world, men have been seeking prostitutes. It's the way America tries to portray itself as the best place for women and critsing others, that make it seem ludicrous to see women treated the way Mrs' Spitzer and many others have been;

Dang! Wassup with those New York politicians?

See? This is why we need more female leaders. When's the last time you heard of a female politician having an affair?

I have never heard of a female leader or politician having an affair. Unforunatelly for women, some men go too far. And can, to defend themselves, use women - after the act - in very cruel and selfish ways.

See? This is why I say, from now on, no more male leaders- only female leaders ;-)

Would you now support Clinton and give up Obama? Who knows, with time, maybe some thing as sordid would be dug up about Obama. May be his opponents already have that dug up and only waiting for the right time to pounce.

Oh, hell no! Istaghfurallah! Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she's the right choice. I'd vote for another woman- not her. And besides, one of the reasons I'm voting for Obama is because he could well be the first female President- see my blog where I discussed this.

I agree. This guy is a hypocrite of the highest order.

Your post got me thinking about this topic that the poor humiliated wife got dragged up there into the spotlight after his fall from grace. I am guessing that in American politics, the family, ie. spouse and kids, are on parade throughout the election process. I agree with you that it is absolutely cruel in this case, as in Ms. Clinton's and others before her, to have to get up on the podium. Family, at least in outward appearances, counts for a lot in politics. If this guy has any hope in a political future, he'll have to show himself as a good husband and father--despite his lack of self-control.

Another thing, I think men that frequent prostitutes believe they are doing the honorable thing, and I am thinking that most wives would agree. The men pay to have their sexual needs satisfied and that's it--no involvement, no committment. Falling in love or dating involves obligations and another person's needs.

Raaasa: what I fail to completely understand is why these women agree to appear with their husbands in public when the husbands are giving statements. The wives can be supportive at home; but in public - I can't understand that.
