Green: Masdar City
Paradoxically built in one of the most carbon emitting cities in the world - Masdar City in the UAE, once completed - will be the world's first zero-carbon city.It is designed to be not only free of cars and skyscrapers but also powered by the sun. It will be the world’s first CO2-neutral city. Masdar City is to consume so little energy that local resources will satisfy requirements—without generating net emissions. If the project is successful, urban planners will have a blueprint that could help them prepare for an oil-free future.
Masdar's construction will proceed by neighborhoods instead of all at once as previously planned. The city is reportedly going to cost $18.5bn. and its development is expected to be completed in 2025. If the City - which focuses on the use of renewable energy - can work, and be as sustainable and as environmentally friendly as planned, it will indeed be an excellent example for others to follow.
