Is Smoking Tobacco or Marijuana Haram?
Is Smoking Tobacco or Marijuana (cannabis, weed, pot, hashish, bhang) Haram? One doesn't need Ulamas to know the answer for this. The Verses from the Noble Qur'an are very clear and explicit about this:
Tobacco, whether smoked or chewed has been proven beyond any reasonable doubts to be addictive - smoking is a form of drug dependence, but one with especially insidious characteristics. Like many other drugs, the chemicals in cigarette affect the chemistry of the brain and nervous system and create dependence and lead to compulsive use. And it is very harmful. Smoking tobacco includes the use of: cigars, cigarettes, pipes, sheesha, hookahs and so on. All these are addictive, intoxicating and are very harmful to health. It's no secret that smoking causes lung cancer. But what about diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, erectile dysfunction? Fifty years into the war on smoking, scientists still are adding diseases to the long list of cigarettes' harms.... (a very recent article in the HuffPost). As if all these facts aren't discouraging enough - smoking and the use of tobacco is a waste of money that only enormously profits a very few individuals who own tobacco companies. Those who smoke do not only harm themselves, but those around them even more while they smoke.
As for Marijuana (cannabis, weed, pot, hashish, bhang), used in any form - is even worst. Smoked, the smoke inhaled not only has all the harmful effects of cannabis sativa, but has the added harmful effect of smoke as in cigarettes. Marijuana - often called pot, grass, reefer, weed, herb, Mary Jane, or MJ—is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of Cannabis sativa - is an intoxicant: its use impairs a person's ability to form new memories (see below) and to shift focus. THC also disrupts coordination and balance by binding to receptors in the cerebellum and basal ganglia—parts of the brain that regulate balance, posture, coordination, and reaction time. Therefore, learning, doing complicated tasks, participating in athletics, and driving are also affected....Drug Abuse.
It is because of marijuana that the streets of Colombia, Mexico and many other Latin and Central American countries are unsafe and deadly. People live in fear and are terrified. Just because of these leaves. Acapulco, Ixtapa, Cancun - are no longer the exotic, mesmerizing tourist's destinations because of the terror cannabis has unleashed on their streets. One of the reasons that the streets of Johannesburg are so unsafe and dangerous, is marijuana. The USA, and some Central and Latin American countries are considering legalizing cannabis - time will prove how wrong they are. How many die each day, worldwide, directly or indirectly because of marijuana? There are many, including Muslims, who keep on repeating or even touting the many health 'benefits' of cannabis; wine has many benefits too, but it is haram. Any Muslim who knows what marijuana is and what it does to the brain and body, will know, without doubt, that it is HARAM.
Any Muslim who truly cares about his/her mental and physical health will agree that - smoking any of the above is harmful to oneself, to families, to communities and to societies. Just look around you and observe those who smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes, sheesha (hookah); or marijuana, hasheesh, bhang, pot etc. - and ask yourself: what good does it serve to smoke these? They serve no good except harm. They are a waste of time and money. All are harmful and destructive to the mind and the body. Aren't these reasons enough to make them haram?

O ye who believe! Intoxicants and gambling, (dedication of) stones, and (divination by) arrows, are an abomination,- of Satan's handwork: eschew such (abomination), that ye may prosper. ~ Surat Al-Mā'idah ~ 5:90As for the Sunnah:
They ask you about intoxicants and games of chance. Say: In both of them there is a great sin and means of profit for men, and their sin is greater than their profit. And they ask you as to what they should spend. Say: What you can spare. Thus does Allah make clear to you the communications, that you may ponder. (Skakir) Surah ~ Al Baqara - 2:219
