Can Muslims get and be more involved in saving Wildlife and the Environment?
Ilmu Giri Pesantren |
How many of us Muslims are aware and active: in planting trees or saving oceans or on Greenpeace or on World Wildlife Fund or saving rhinos or saving elephants? There is none amongst the Muslims who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, but is regarded as a charitable gift for him. ~ Sunnah. Whoever plants a tree and diligently looks after it until it matures and bears fruit is rewarded. If a Muslim plants a tree or sows a field and humans and beasts and birds eat from it, all of that is love and mercy on his/her part. And We sent down rain from the sky and made grow therein [plants] of every noble kind. ~ Surat Luqman - 31:10. Do we Muslims ever heed this? Do we take care of plants? How many of us have planted trees?
God has appointed us his stewards over the whole Earth and yet we have failed. It is He Who hath made you (His) agents, inheritors of the earth....... ~ Surat Al-'Anam - 6:165. God instructed us and intended for us to be His 'stewards', 'agents', 'viceroys' here on Earth. But we Mankind have failed in that duty. Most of us are wastefully using the Earth's resources in very ruinous ways: wasting water, wasting food, wasting energy and polluting the environment; we are relentlessly cutting down trees and deforesting large chunks of our Planet so fast that we have driven many species to extinction. We, Muslims, have to do all that we can in fulfilling our duties and being what God intended us to be here on Earth. We have to be active. We have to: plant trees, protect oceans, protect the environment and do all that we can to conserve save Planet Earth.
