Obama: the odd politician
Unlike Mr. Sarkozy, the French President, who would go to extremes and does not hesitate to advance his political fortunes - even if it means going against the much vaunted French 'principles' of liberty and freedom; Mr. Barack Obama does and acts as we would expect the leader of the Land of Democracy and Liberty to do. Even if it means his going against the wishes of almost 70% of his constituency:
"As a citizen, and as president, I believe Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as anyone else in this country. That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances. This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable," President Obama said. Most Americans do not support the building of the mosque near what they call 'ground zero'; but most seem to forget that the much admired and envied strength and greatness of their country lies not in the military or economic might that they have, but in their country's principles and values which very much support freedom and tolerance. As a Republican Congressman said: "The United States was founded on the principle of religious liberty and tolerance, and it is equally important 234 years later that we uphold this principal. Hate should have no place in America".
