Glimpses Of Afghanistan

I read James. A. Michener's book on Afghanistan: 'Caravan' - many years back. Like all Michener's books, I found it riveting, totally absorbing, educating and an excellent read with many hard facts. Not only does the plot keep one spellbound, the characters are extremely fascinating and well developed. What I find most amazing now, when remembering the book - is how James Michener's observations and notes are so true and a reflection on what relates to Afghanistan, even today.

'Caravan', a book by one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, is not one of Michener's epic books, like many of his other ones, but a novel very much worth taking the time to read.

Whether the facts and interpretations portrayed by Michener are correct, depends and is subjective. But what is certain, is: Afghans are a people so full of pride and are too independent to accept or allow foreign interference in their country; and Afghanistan can never be subdued or subjugated. Never.

Mousa: This is Afghanistan... Alexander the Great try to conquer this country... then Genghis Khan, then the British. Now Russia. But Afghan people fight hard, they never be defeated. Ancient enemy make prayer about these people... you wish to hear?

Rambo: Um-hum.

Mousa: Very good. It says, 'May God deliver us from the venom of the Cobra, teeth of the tiger, and the vengeance of the Afghan.' Understand what this means?

Rambo: That you guys don't take any shit?

Mousa: Yes... something like this.
