Qat Kills!

Just a few days ago, I wrote on the very destructive effects of Khat on health and society in general - and the dangers smokers pose not only to themselves but to non- smokers too; and now this. Do we still need more to be said about the dangers of khat. Doctors have issued a warning about severe heart problems associated with chewing Khat leaves. Smoking and drinking, are still greater health hzards; but so is chewing khat!

As for smoking: if a developing country like Kenya, can take concrete steps and legally ban smoking in public places; why can't Arab countries do the same? Most of which have much better resources than Kenya?

It's been proven that smoking poses many dangers to one's health. I'm impressed that the Ministry of Health in Kenya has taken up this issue seriously. However, I doubt whether it's a practical approach. If they ban smoking in public places, people will just continue smoking indoors where there's poor ventilation and a higher chance for second-hand smoke. I'm not sure what resources we have in Kenya to help people quit; I hope the Ministry will invest in them so they can have a viable option for those who want to kick the habit.

It is a start! I remember, over twenty years ago, the then Minister for Health, Arthur Magugu, banned smoking in all public transports - it has been working very well. much earlier before that, it was cinema and other public halls; that worked very well too.

just as with the law that requires all people in public trasportations to use seat belts; and enforcing speed limits; many said it won't work! And now, it is working very well! Saving lives!

I am certain this, too, will work!
